Why Waste A Trip

I finally made it over to Target only to find that there were no baseball cards to be found, only Football and Hockey. I also checked the clearance and there were NO cards on clearance. Not wanting to waste the trip (although we did grab some frozen cookies to bake later) I grabbed this pack of Absolute so that I would have something to open.

No Pats.
Instead of the "Three Exclusive Blue Parallels Included" I got a blue and two aqua, and two other inserts.
These are all available on TCDB if interested.

After Target we headed over to Half Price Books where I found this gem:

1997 Topps has been on my Someday list to collect, and it would have been fun getting it through trades, but for $15 I couldn't pass it up. Now do I open it and binder it so I can look at it, or leave it sealed? If I open it I can find out what the "8 randomly selected insert cards included" are.

Trades have been coming in too.
Here's one from scrubeenie

A scattering of wants.

And another from DThiry

Ah, more of those pesky Uno cards.

And one more from pksteinberg

Peter is getting me started on the 2026 Topps Angels Team Set.

So, should I open the 1997 Topps Set box?

  1. For me, the only reason not to open the Box of 1997 Topps is if you are worried about bricking. Otherwise open it up!

  2. Nice find on the 1997 set. Some would consider that vintage. Enjoy!

  3. If it's a set you enjoy and would proudly display in a binder, open it. If it's destined for a life inside a box then keep it sealed!

    1. I'm with Matt. Personally, it's not a set I need to look at so I'd keep it sealed. And Crh614 has a point about the bricking. Although... seeing which inserts are hiding in that box would be cool.

Whatever you decide to do... congratulations on that very cool find. I totally would buy that factory set for that price.

  4. Very neat price on that 1997. My vote is to open! I was so happy to be able to send you some cards; and that Holo Foil photographs so differently than the scan I made of it for TCDB. RJ: I'm one of those who considers anything over 25 years to be Vintage.

  5. First of all, the '97 Topps set is one of my all-time favorites, so I hope you open up and enjoy it! That's a really nice price for one too. Good deals on the trades--another reason I'm happy to see you back posting here since you're so active with TCDb trades. And lastly, will you please let me know if the JJ McCarthy and Kenneth Grant cards from your Absolute pack might be available? (I appreciate you sending the Uno Moody and a couple others already!)

  6. Okay, so what part of a Half Price do I look in for cards? Mind blown!

  7. All over: Vintage section, Sports, Clearance or on an island kiosk. Sometimes next to the register.
