I recently finished acquiring the seven Special Offer insert cards found in packs of 1987 Sportflics.
I don't know if these were found one-per-pack or were more random than that.
The first four Exclusive Collector Offer cards offered 16 different Magic Motion Cooperstown cards and Superstar Player Discs that you could send away for. The offers came in four series. You could select one card/disk combo for $4.99 ($14.72 today) or the full series (4 cards and 4 discs) for $19.96. Wow, seems a bit pricey to me. I can't imagine many of these were sent away for.
Ryne Sandberg and the Cubs representing the first offer card.
A good pick to represent based on the Series 1 players, although Schmidt would have been good too.
So if you wanted all of Series 1 (four cards and four discs) it would have cost you $58.88 today.
That's insane. Is my math right, does that make sense?
Dale Murphy and Braves is next up for the Series 2 cards.
A good pick as far as I'm concerned as I have a Murphy PC.
This series however is pretty stacked with Fernando, Tony Gwynn and Ripken as well.
Goerge Brett is a solid pick for Series 3.
Kirby Puckett would have been a good second choice though.
Keith Hernandez is a bit of a surprising choice to me for Series 4.
Rickey Henderson would have been a good choice, or the young phenom Bo Jackson.
Thankfully there were no Angels offered so I never felt compelled to chase these.
Regardless, I'm pretty sure that I never opened any Sportflics back in the day. They were either too pricey or I was not interested in them.
Next up is an offer card for Team Logo Pins
I'm assuming these were small, maybe the size of a quarter, and made of metal.
The Angels logo is shown so I'll need to track another of these cards down for my team sets.
Each pin was $3.50 ($10.33 today) and again, seems a bit pricey.
You now also need to include a Sportflics wrapper when you mail in your check.
Next up is an offer for a sports card album.
It was popular in the 80's to offer up extra merch, hence the similar Topps Company Store cards.
The nice album came with 12 pages and 9 random(?) Sportflics cards for $10.00.
This might have been a better deal back then, especially with the nine cards included. I think there were five cards per pack, and packs were probably around a couple bucks each.
The last of the offer cards was for a Team Player Card.
For $2.50 you could get a 5 or 6-card mini set, or the full set of 26 cards for $10.
But wait, there's more.
Each mini set also comes with three Team Trivia cards!
Seems like the best deal yet.
Except now you also need to include five wrappers if you want the whole set.
All-in-all, I'm happy to have completed this 1987 Sportflics Special Offer cards set.
